An defence minister has stated that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been advised to avoid discussing secret matters in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all modern cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
