New research reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these medications must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
